We helped Shipowners build a broker-first mobile app
Shipowners already had a web platform that gave brokers access to essential documentation, quotes, and policy details. But it wasn’t built for mobile use. Brokers needed to access data easily on the go and while travelling, and the web app wasn’t the right tool for that.
Our goal was to transform that experience into a modern, high-performing mobile app. At the same time, we aimed to refine the design, meet accessibility standards, and ensure the app worked flawlessly with Shipowners’ existing systems.
There were no major technical obstacles, but a few key challenges shaped our work:
- Accessibility compliance: The app needed to meet WCAG standards. That meant adjusting the existing colour palette and collaborating closely with Shipowners’ marketing team to align on brand-compliant, accessible visuals.
- Backend integration and real-time data: Shipowners’ internal team managed the backend and APIs. We worked side by side to configure integrations, maintain security, and enable real-time communication without disrupting their existing infrastructure.
- Corporate processes: As with any large organisation, structured approvals and documentation cycles required discipline and coordination. Regular demos and clear reporting kept the process on track and transparent.
A structured, iterative process
Before each development iteration, we re-evaluated user stories and validated priorities with the client. Although the project followed a fixed-price model, we maintained an iterative mindset, allowing small adjustments to improve usability and performance without scope creep. Regular sprint demos every two weeks ensured transparency and alignment.
Building for performance and responsiveness
A major focus was on perceived performance – how quickly the app feels to respond. Instead of waiting for the entire screen to load, we prioritised showing key information first and used loaders and microinteractions to provide real-time feedback. The result is a fast, responsive experience that gives brokers confidence that their actions are being processed instantly.
Security and data handling
Because the app connects to sensitive insurance data, security was a top priority. It doesn’t store any confidential information locally. All data is pulled securely from the backend via encrypted channels, while only minimal configuration data is stored on the device to ensure smooth operation.
Real-time communication with web sockets
The app supports asynchronous workflows through web sockets. This allows processes such as report generation and quote submission to continue in the background while brokers carry on with other tasks. Real-time updates keep them informed of progress without manual refreshes.
Accessibility built into every stage
Accessibility was crucial to the solution. During discovery, we identified that Shipowners’ primary blue didn’t meet AA contrast standards. Throughout design and implementation, we worked closely with their marketing and design teams to darken the shade of blue to achieve full colour contrast compliance.
The result is an app that not only performs well but is inclusive, consistent, and fully aligned with the brand’s identity.
The app became a core tool for brokers, increasing daily usage and reducing time spent managing client requests.
Given that, it’s not surprising that client satisfaction went up, and Shipowners strengthened their position as a modern, tech-driven insurer in the maritime industry.
The project also created a scalable foundation for future digital services, helping Shipowners move faster with new initiatives and stay ahead in a competitive market.
